Arriving in Hanoi

Out flight from Singapore was only just over 2 hours even though it is suggested that it is about 3.5 hours

We saw the Visa on Arrival service and went straight over as there not many people there. Quite a few French people in front of us.

We gave our Visa on Arrival Letter (something we pre-purchased about 3 months ago – I think we paid about 15 USD per person for this). We were told to go around the corner.

We waited and waited and noticed that people after us were getting processed before us.

What they were doing was placing the passport down on top of the other passports after processing so only the latest passport was being given back to the travellers.

Since we were quite early getting processed, we were almost LAST to get ours back. Not too much of a problem.

Note: CASH ONLY – 25 USD per person (or Euro + probably other currency – NO ATM)

In Singapore I changed a $50 AUS to $50 USD (well + a couple of SG dollars)

We we had our visa, we went through to immigration – looked like 2 open places to go through – no queue since we took so long at Visa on Arrival.

They took quite a while to process the request and we noticed that the immigration desk/place next to ours had an immigration officer inside but he just played with his phone and did not want to serve anyone!

We then picked up our bag and went straight to Custom – nothing to declare – probably what they wanted!

We met our driver that we had arranged through the hotel to take us from Airport to the Hotel.

We needed money so we went to an ATM – 1 NZD is about 15,000 Vietnamese Dong – but is only about 12,500 at money exchangers.

At the ATM we thought we may need 20 Million – about $1300 NZD – But no go – said we should take 2,000,000 – we flagged this and decided to get some in town.

We later found out that 2,000,000 is all you can get from an ATM which is about $130 NZD – and they charge you 20,000 VND as a processing fee – $1.30 NZD

So pretty crappy really since 130 NZD really buys not a huge amount - we will be hit for $10 NZD + $1.30NZD per $130 NZD in fees!

So we are off in our ride to the city – about 40 KM or so – about 1 hour – we pass lots of rice paddies

We arrive at the hotel and find it to be pretty much as they describe it on the web site which is nice – we are paying $105 USD + 10% Tax per night.

P1030536 P1030537 P1030538

We end up sleeping for about 3-4 hours as we are quite tired and then decide to “venture” out – about 5pm local time on a Friday Evening!

 P1030539 P1030540 P1030541

The roads are very busy – the footpaths are by motor bikes and shops – we walk on the road edge

Crossing the road to get to the Lake is a mission – 100’s of motor bikes and cars per minute – but we survive without injury.

 P1030542 P1030543 P1030544
We get to the lake – called “Hoan Kiem” and it is very green – not inviting at all – but we are Tourists and check it out anyway.

 P1030545 P1030546 P1030547

We walk along the edge of the lake and see people doing Thai Chi and generally relaxing around the edge of the lake – did not notice any Mosquitos.

P1030548 P1030552 P1030553

We saw a lady run across the road – she had a basket of what looked like Croissants – just behind here was a Police Man – he caught up with here and they had a dispute about the basket we assume. She held on and more police arrived – she would not let go – we noticed a 3rd police man call in on his CB and then a truck with a tarpaulin turned up. The cop in the end got the basket off the woman and put it in the back of the truck. The woman was not happy still arguing with the police and was not very happy. In the end the cops went away, the truck drove off, no arrest and an irate woman! No idea of what really happened.

It started to get dark so Pam & I walked back to the hotel – we found quite a few people who thought we needed a new wallet – starting price, 350 (we assume thousand) in the end it went down to 100 (again assume 1000)

We did not buy – if it was 100,000 VNG when that is about $9 NZD

Arrived in Singapore

We arrived in Singapore ok. Flight was good – but quite bumpy and it took a different route than normal over Melbourne and Adelaide.

We arrived into Gate B1 which is flight at the terminal 3, we normally arrive in something bad like B29 which is a 10 minute walk to the main terminal area.

Our bags are checked in from Christchurch all the way to Hanoi so that is great. We have stopped at left luggage and we left our two carry on bags there – cost about 3.40 SG for each piece (up to 24 hours).

There was some good tasting in the duty free for single malts so thought I better try a few:P1030513

  • Cardu 12yr
  • The Singleton 15 yr
  • Laphroaig 18 yr
  • Bowmore 21 yr
  • Glenfarclas 25 yr

I also tried a strange vodka blend which was Absolut with Coffee + Hazel nuts. Quite interesting to keep in the cupboard but not for travelling.

So we then proceeded to immigration to try to get out of the airport. We said we are just going into town for dinner and that was ok. So we went to the train station and bought a couple of tickets into town. They cost about $3.30 SG each, we had about 14 stops to go until the station we wanted to get off at. That is about 40-50 minutes.

Along the way I suggested to Pam that why don’t we just get off at the next stop and see what is around?

We did this at a station called Lavender. Not good – nothing there – didn’t find any food in 10 minutes so we went back to the station.

We found that our credit was now used up so we had to buy another ticket. We continued on for a few more stops and Pam saw Raffles City so we got off there thinking it was near Raffles Hotel – wrong – that would be City Hall.

So went for a wonder to try to see what food we could find and we found the river quite quickly.

P1030516 P1030517 P1030522 P1030523

There was a heap of people out there all drinking and smoking – all the restaurants had people outside trying to sell you there menu – you get sick of this after about 30 second, but worse after 30 restaurants.

We decided that we would eat at one that was sort of quiet with a nice view over the river.

We had eaten not too long before arrival (well nibbled since we knew we were going out) so we were not that hungry.

So were offered free wine or beer with our meal so we had a Tiger beer each and ordered 1/2 a peeking duck.

Pretty crappy – 4 out of 10 for the duck pancakes. After the skin was used for the pancakes they just chopped up the duck back in the kitchen and this was nice once you got the bones out of the way. This was $38SG for the duck + 10% Service + 7 % GST so all up about $46 SG in total.

P1030525 P1030526 P1030527

P1030528 P1030530 P1030531

We then went back and found our MRT station and went back to the airport – about 13 stops – getting tired now as this was about 9pm or about 2am NZ Time.

We got back to the airport and went through immigration and found our Transit Hotel.

We were 75 minutes earlier than we booked but luckily we could extend this without any issue even though they were fully booked.

So we ended up with 9 hours in the Transit hotel for about $120 SG

We had shower and a good sleep and then another shower in the morning.

We felt like breakfast so we had Pork Noodles – about $7SG for a Large bowl that we both shared.

We bought some drinks from Duty Free – 2x Bombay Safire (26.90 SG), 1 Russian Standa Vodka (37.50SG) and 1 Absolut Vodka (21.70 SG) – this should last our next 21 days

All good for the flight to Hanoi.

Where we are staying in Singapore

We have to transit in Singapore overnight; We arrive into Singapore Changi airport at about 5:30pm local time, and our flight from Singapore to Hanoi is not until 10:30am the next day. A total of about 17 hours.

We are going to plan to leave our luggage at the left luggage area – about $5 SG per piece for up to 24 hours (not sure if 24 hours stops at midnight?) but we will only leave it there for about 5 hours anyway.

We have booked the Singapore transit hotel for a 6 hour block ($65 SG) + 2 additional hours ($13/hr SG) + Tax from 11pm until 7am.

We are going to then travel by train into Singapore and eat duck or Crab and then head back to the airport to get into our room about 11pm.

The Singapore transit hotel is in each of the 3 terminals at Changi airport. It is inside the airport, no need to go through immigration if you do not want to leave the airport.
